Essentia is an alternative rock-band from Tampere, Finland. The band was formed in 2001 and after releasing five english language EPs the five-membered brotherhood is celebrates their 10th anniversary with the release of the album Decade

Essentia is a band that greatly resembles a family. Now, after ten years of highs and lows it is time for this band to celebrate. For Essentia celebration is a synonym for playing gigs. In addition, there is an album waiting to be released. The anniversary album Decade is available in several stores starting from September 27.

The album reaches for the deep waters but it does not shy away from the sweet fragrance of the flowers of humor. The lyrics may criticize child prostitution and domestic violence but they also remind the listeners about the importance of fighting for one’s dreams and tell how a smile has a great power over all the evil, just to mention a few themes. The songs have not been written in the easiest way possible but they are composed from the sweat, the tears and the joyous cries of their writers  - and seasoned with a bit of luck.

The songs on Decade have been composed during the years gone by so they represent the different phases Essentia has gone through. The band’s style has gradually developed to its current form that could be described as straightforward but multifaceted rock. All the band members have had an opportunity to do what inspires them the most: to be creative, to stretch the boundaries - and to be honest.

Essentia - as a band - is approaching the teen age and is still going strong. The band has played approximately 200 gigs and participated in a few interesting projects including making the first Nordic music video in 3D and a tour in Europe in 2008. Essentia also sometimes manages to lose the sense of time and place, especially when in good company... and in this family called Essentia the company is always good.

Essentia started in 2001 when the vocalist, Joonas, was recovering from a car accident and he had to spend long periods of time at the hospital. As a part of his recovery process Joonas wrote down his feelings and the outcome was, well, music. With a little help from his friends Joonas polished the songs until they were ready to be performed. Still, the history goes even further than this.

 Essentia’s guitarist, Sammy, has being playing in the same bands as Joonas for about 15 years already. At first they played outside with their winter coats on, then they launched a signature beer brand for their band and finally this group, who had shouted rock’n’roll in the far edges of Hämeenkyrö, made the police come and cut short their rehearsal session. That made the band stronger and gave them faith. Some of the people who contributed to Essentia at that time nowadays play in bands like Uniklubi, Lovex and Katra.

 Without this band these five guys, who grew from small young lads to adult hairy men, would have a few less stories to share with their grandchildren.
